ARTISTIC NOTES

Andy Rogow, Artistic Director

The opening night of a world premiere play is both incredibly exciting and terribly nerve racking. I want the vision of the playwright to be realized while also hoping that the audience is rewarded with an entertaining and thought provoking play. Of course, it doesn’t hurt if the critics like it as well! “The Goldberg Variations” was a rewarding challenge on many levels, as the actors and I worked nightly with playwright Stuart Meltzer to clarify the relationships of the family and in which dimension of son Caleb’s mind they were playing. The end product has audiences laughing a lot and even shedding a tear or two at the end. It’s these responses that inspire me to do what I do. Thank you for being my inspiration production after production.

JOINING FORCES FOR FUN!

This summer, Island City Stage joined up with the City of Oakland Park to present a two-week drama camp for 12 junior high students. The camp, led by Island City Stage board members Rick Karlin and Peter Lovello taught the basics of stage craft; blocking, acting, singing and movement as well as technical aspects such as set and costume design. The two-week camp, which took place at Oakland Park’s Gordon Library, culminated in a performance for family and friends of the camp’s attendees. This was the first step in expanding Island City’s scope to include a youth theater.
